‘The room being small for the number of guests, there were
no available corners for groups of pot plants…Trails of ivy hung down from the
mantelshelf, over the sheet of glass which, in this instance, concealed the
fireplace.. From a hook just under the shelf I suspended by yellow ribbons a
basketful of yellow tulips, Roman hyacinths, begonia leaves and mimosa.’
